53 Arrests, Pitch Invasions Mar Real Madrid’s Champions League Triumph Over Borussia Dortmund At Wembley
London: Real Madrid’s record-extending 15th Champions League victory was marred by 53 arrests and few pitch invasions at the Wemble Stadium in London on Sunday, according to Mail Online. In the European football’s annual flagship match, goals from Dani Carvajal and Vinicius Junior helped the Los Blancos win 2-0 against Borussia Dortmund in the final. However, the chaos started even befre the match.
Prior to the kick-off, several fans were caught on camera charging towards the stadium and attempting to enter via the ‘Club Wembley’ entrance. Security officers were alert enough to push and turn them away. After the game started, Vinicius was taken by surprise when a fan breached the security to take a selfie with him. If this weren’t enough, security cameras caught people swarming in through the stadium side door when the presentation ceremony was underway.
However, the lapses in security came despite a five million pounds ring of steel defence that has been put by the Football Association. It was also reported that the pitch invaders were hugely motivated by the huge amount of cash prize announced by controversial Russian influencer Mellstroy, who offered fans 300,000 pounds to those who can pull off the stunt.
Earlier, it was Carlo Ancelotti’s fifth Champions League title and third in two spells with Real Madrid and two more than his closest rivals Zinedine Zidane, Pep Guardiola and Bob Paisley. Dani Carvajal, Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Nacho won the trophy a sixth time to equal the benchmark set by Madrid icon Paco Gento.
Real Madrid’s win comes just a year after Manchester City lifted the trophy for the first time, a victory many believed would herald a new era of dominance for Guardiola’s team in Europe. Instead, it was Ancelotti who underlined his case to be considered the finest coach of his generation for his continued supremacy in the Champions League.
