Israeli Strike On Gaza School Kills Over 100 People; IDF Claims It Was ‘Hamas Base’
More than 100 people lost their lives and several others were injured in an Israeli strike that hit a school in Gaza Strip on Saturday, August10, city’s civil defence agency claimed. The dreadful air strike hit a school in the Daraj district, sheltering displaced people, the official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.
“The Israeli strikes targeted the displaced people while performing Fajr (dawn) prayers, a matter that led to a rapid increase in the number of casualties,” the Hamas-run Gaza government media statement read.
“The death toll is now between 90 to 100 and there are dozens more wounded. Three Israeli rockets hit the school that was housing displaced Palestinians,” Gaza’s civil defence agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP.
Israel’s attack on the school led to a massive fire, and rescue operations are presently underway to aid the cornered Palestinians. With the agency describing the onslaught as ‘terrifying’, it further highlighted that some people were unfortunately caught up in the flames during the bombardment.
Recounting the happenings from Thursday, Israeli forces launched attacks on a pair of educational institutions in Gaza, which unfortunately resulted in the tragic loss of 18 lives. They stand by their assertion that their intended targets were chiefly Hamas command outposts. Further escalating the tension, another school in Gaza City, Al-Taba’een, was subjected to airstrike attacks this past Saturday. According to the Israeli Defence Force, the airstrikes weren’t aimless, they precisely targeted and hit members of Hamas, allegedly operating from a command center established within the affected school.
Rescue teams tried to reach women and children who were trapped in the flames but failed as the Israeli authorities have cut water in the area, reported Al Jazeera.
The local news announced a ghastly incident in Gaza – three rockets hit a school during the morning prayers where numerous refugees, driven out by the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, were taking refuge. The Israeli armed forces alleged that this school was a veiled hub for terror-related activities, and claimed that they had taken sufficient action to reduce civilian casualties.
