UGC woke up colleges and universities after the High Court order, said – to form this committee soon
UGC has issued a reminder to all the institutions after the High Court order in the suicide case of a student that they should all form a grievance redressal committee in their institution.
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has woken up Higher Education Institutions (HEI) from deep sleep after the suicide of a law student. UGC asked all the institutions to form grievance redressal committees for the students within two weeks. A circular has been issued regarding this. This circular came after the court ordered all educational institutions running graduation and postgraduation courses to form these committees to resolve the complaints of the students.
Circular issued
UGC said in the official circular, “In compliance with the directions of the Hon’ble Court, educational institutions are urged to take immediate steps to constitute Student Grievance Redressal Committee(s) by the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Students’ Grievances) Regulations, 2023. The regulations are available on the UGC website ugc.ac.in.”
The order was issued on 9 September.
This direction has been issued after the order of the Delhi High Court dated 9 September 2024 in the suicide case of IP University law student Sushant Rohilla. UGC had already issued the University Grants Commission (Redressal of Students’ Grievances) Regulations, 2023 on 11 April 2023. As per these regulations, all higher education institutions are required to form a Grievance Redressal Committee (SGRC).
Asked to form committees within 30 days
UGC had earlier notified the institutions on April 12, 2023, to constitute these committees within 30 days, but many have not complied yet. UGC has now issued a final call for compliance, stressing that any further delay will lead to legal action.
According to the official circular of UGC, “Colleges are requested to provide the details of SGRCs constituted by them to their affiliated universities. In turn, universities are requested to provide the details of SGRCs constituted by them and SGRCs constituted by their affiliated institutions, if any, in the format given below to the official email ID by 24th September 2024.”
