Did you know that Indian Railways sells train tickets to passengers at subsidized prices? Yes, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, train tickets are sold at a 46 percent discount, with the national transporter giving a whopping sum of Rs 56,993 crore in total subsidy to all categories of passengers each year.
A 46 percent discount essentially means that a if a train ticket is prices at Rs 200, its sold to the passenger for just Rs 108, a subsidy of Rs 92 or 46%.
Speaking in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday while replying to multiple questions on restoring discounts given to various categories of train passengers, Vaishnaw revealed that if the price of a ticket is Rs 100, then the railways charges just Rs 54 for it — a discount of 46 percent.
“A total of Rs 56,993 crore subsidy is given every year by the Indian Railways to all classes of passengers,” Vaishnaw said during the Question Hour in the lower house.
Meanwhile, responding to another question on rapid train service, the minister said the railways has already started such a service — Namo Bharat Rapid Rail — between Bhuj and Ahmedabad and asserted that the satisfaction level of passengers is “extremely high due to its superior service.”
According to officials, the Namo Bharat Rapid Rail has significantly boosted intercity connectivity by covering the 359-kilometre distance between Bhuj and Ahmedabad in just 5 hours and 45 minutes, with stops at several stations along the way.
