Explained: What is sarcoma cancer that killed famous singer Cat Janice at 31

Cat Janice, the famous singer and songwriter known for her viral hit “Dance You Outta My Head” on TikTok passed away on Wednesday after battling sarcoma cancer.

Janice was only 31 years old. The news of her death was announced by her brother on an Instagram post.

As per reports, Janice found out that she was suffering from sarcoma which is a rare form of cancer arising in the bones and soft tissues, after detecting a lump in her neck. She shared this information on TikTok. As a diagnosis of this, she underwent surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

What is Sarcoma?

According to the Cleveland Clinic, Sarcoma is a rare cancerous tumour that develops in the bone and connective tissue like fat, muscles, blood vessels, nerves and the tissues which cover the bones and joints.

Sarcoma is a rare cancer which only affects 1 per cent of all adult cancer diagnoses and about 15 per cent of childhood cancer diagnoses. Each year, almost 16,000 sarcomas are diagnosed in the United States.

Where are the most sarcomas found?

Sarcomas can develop in multiple parts of the body from our head to the toes:

40 per cent occur in your lower extremities (legs, ankles, feet).

15 per cent occur in your upper extremities (shoulders, arms, wrists, hands).

30 per cent occur in your trunk/chest wall/abdomen/pelvis.

15 per cent occur in your head and neck.
