AI-powered Devices Will Not Replace Smartphones in at least next 5 years: Lenovo’s XR And Metaverse Head
Lenovo is still one of the biggest players in the smartphone market with its subsidiary Motorola. But, Vishal Shah, who leads the XR and Metaverse domains at Lenovo, has the task of building the next computational device which someday can replace phones.
Lenovo is already experimenting with a few categories but Vishal believes that it’s very difficult to replace phones at least for the next 5 years.
“A smartphone is the stickiest device I have come across. We take it out thousands of times a day to check the time, weather, and messages. To me, the device the smartphone is nowhere near.
I think a device like a phone will fade into the background where it will be used to connect other smart devices like a smart glass or watches but it will still be the central hub to manage all devices,” Vishal told Times Now Tech in an exclusive conversation at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024.
Vishal said that India and its talent pool can play a big role in developing AI capabilities for big tech companies like Lenovo. He said that AI startups can also see a big boom in the country in the coming days.
“From design of these LLMs, coding to security where India is so good, with its talent pool will be a huge asset to any company, including Lenovo. Also, the startup ecosystem in India is as exciting as ever. I think it will be the next boom for companies that invest in AI. It’s going to be a very disruptive technology,” he said.
