Elon Musk’s xAI Makes Grok Open-Source Amid Lawsuit Against OpenAI
Elon Musk announced on Monday that his artificial intelligence startup xAI would be making its ChatGPT challenger “Grok” open-source later this week.
This decision comes shortly after Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, the organization he co-founded in 2015 but left in 2018, accusing it of straying from its original nonprofit mission and prioritizing profit.
Musk has been vocal about his concerns regarding the commercialization of technology by major tech companies like Google. His lawsuit against OpenAI, which is backed by Microsoft, alleges that the organization shifted its focus towards profitability. In response, OpenAI released emails showing that Musk himself had supported a plan to create a for-profit entity and had considered a merger with Tesla to generate substantial revenue.
In a post on X, the social media platform owned by Musk, he announced the decision to open-source Grok, signalling a shift in xAI’s approach to technology development. This move would provide the public with free access to the code behind Grok, allowing for experimentation and innovation in the AI field. It also brings xAI in line with other companies like Meta and France’s Mistral, which have embraced open-source AI models.
Google has also entered the open-source AI arena with its Gemma model, allowing developers to customize the technology according to their requirements.
The debate around open-sourcing AI has been fueled by tech investors like Vinod Khosla and Marc Andreessen, who have been discussing the implications since Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI. While open-sourcing technology can accelerate progress and innovation, there are concerns about the potential misuse of open-source AI models by malicious actors, including terrorists.
