New Mercedes-AMG E53 Unveiled With Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

The new Mercedes-AMG E53 has made its global debut with a new look and plug-in hybrid powertrain. The car based on the sixth-generation E-Class retains its in-line-six engine.

However, in its latest avatar, the car is more powerful because of the boost that it receives from the new EV motor. All of this put together makes the four-door car even more powerful than the last generation of the E63.

The 3.0-litre twin-turbo in-line-six-cylinder engine used in the Mercedes-AMG E53 is capable of producing 449 hp. It is aided by an electric motor producing 162 hp of power giving it a total output of 577 hp. This power can be increased to up to 603 hp when using the race start function of the car with a peak torque of 750 Nm. The power is transferred to the wheels using the AMG speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission.

When all of this is put to use, the car can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in 3.8 seconds. The brand has electronically limited the car’s top speed to 250 kmph which can be boosted to 280 kmph using AMG’s optional driver’s package.

The electric motor used in the vehicle is powered by a 21.22 kWh battery battery pack which offers an electric-only range of up to 100 km. This battery can be charged using an 11 kW charger in around 6 hours. The buyers also have the option of a 60 kW fast charger which can juice it up from 10-80 percent in 20 minutes.

When driving in electric-only mode the car is capable of going up to 140 kmph. Additionally, the German automaker has added a “Battery Hold” mode which can be used to maintain the charge level for later use.

To improve the handling and dynamics of the car, the brand has stiffened the chassis which is aided by a sporty suspension with adaptive damping. Furthermore, the car gets a high-performance braking setup with bigger brakes and standard rear-axle steering. The car also has the option of AMG Dynamic Plus which offers an electronically controlled rear axle locking differential, even larger brakes, and a Race Start function.

To complement the performance, the Mercedes-AMG E53 gets a signature vertical slat illuminated AMG grille, large air intakes on the front bumper, and an aggressive design for the headlamps. It holds the ground using 19-inch alloy wheels with the option of 20-inch or 21-inch wheels.

Similarly, the interiors of the E53 hybrid have been equipped with an MBUX superscreen layout. It is complemented by man-made leather upholstery with red stitching. Additionally, the car gets an AMG performance steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather, among other things.
