When someone falls ill or suffers an injury, the cost of his treatment can be huge. Additionally, the cost of medicines further increases the financial burden. Keeping in mind the welfare of the poor and needy, the Central Government opened Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendras across the country to reduce the cost of medicines.
Launched by the Government of India in 2008 as the Jan Aushadhi Project, it was renamed in 2015 under the Narendra Modi government, becoming the Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Yojana. However, in 2016, it reverted to its original name, Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Pariyojana.

Benefits of Jan Aushadhi Kendras:
The primary objective of Jan Aushadhi Kendras is to provide high-quality medicines at affordable prices to economically weaker sections and needy people. Any person from an economically deprived section can visit these centres and buy medicines at low prices. The awareness spread by these centres aims to educate people that good quality medicines are not only available at higher prices but can also be obtained at lower prices.
Generic medicines are available at Jan Aushadhi Kendras and people are informed about their effectiveness. In his recent address from the Red Fort, Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned that the monthly cost of diabetes treatment is around ₹3000, while the medicine costs ₹100. However, the same medicine is available at Jan Aushadhi centres for just Rs 10 to 15.
