Before being promoted to the post of Inspector General (IG), Gurpreet Singh Bhullar had also served as the Police Commissioner in Ludhiana. His longest tenure was as Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Mohali. He served as the SSP of Mohali between 2009 and 2013 and again from 2015 to August 2016.
He belongs to the 2004 batch of IPS officers. He holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree. His grandfather Gurdial Singh Bhullar was also an IPS officer and served in Jalandhar during his tenure. Gurdial Singh Bhullar was the SSP of Jalandhar between 1957 and 1960.

In 2016, IPS Gurpreet Singh Bhullar had declared assets worth Rs 152 crore. In his asset declaration, he mentioned eight houses, four agricultural lands and three commercial plots. He also owns a commercial property worth ₹85 lakh and a vacant plot of 1500 square yards in Sainik Farm, Delhi.

At that time, the total assets of former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh were Rs 48 crore and Badal’s total assets were Rs 102 crore.
According to inheritance documents, his most expensive property is worth around ₹45 crore, which is classified as agricultural land in a village in Mohali.
