Current Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif has made Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar the Deputy Prime Minister. Dar, of Kashmiri origin, is considered close to former PM Nawaz Sharif. Before this, he had also been Finance Minister four times. From this decision, it can be understood that Nawaz Sharif is still influential.
A major political development in Pakistan has created a stir in the country’s politics. Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has been given the additional charge of Deputy Prime Minister in the Shehbaz Sharif-led coalition government. A notification was issued by the Cabinet Division. “The PM is pleased to nominate Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs Mohammad Ishaq Dar as Deputy Prime Minister with immediate effect until further notice,” it said. However, this decision was taken when Shahbaz Sharif was on a visit to Saudi Arabia to participate in the World Economic Forum.
Nawaz Sharif’s influence
The promotion of 73-year-old Ishaq Dar is being seen as Nawaz Sharif’s first strong influence in the federal government. Although he is a chartered accountant by profession. Dar was appointed Finance Minister till August 2023 under the coalition government of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) led by the then PM Shehbaz. However, Dar got a new post as foreign minister in the new government formed in March this year.
Ministers remained in previous governments also
Dar had previously served as Federal Commerce and Investment during 1997–99 in the Pakistan government when Nawaz Sharif was PM. Dar also served as the Federal Minister of Finance, Economics Matters, and Statistics twice from 1997 to 1999 and again in 2008. This is not the first time that a Deputy Prime Minister has been appointed. Chaudhary Parvez Ilahi has also been the Deputy Prime Minister for about a year. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister from 25 June 2012 to 29 June 2013 during the tenure of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
