Apple Considers Major Shift in iPhone Camera Production to Reduce Reliance on China: Details Inside
Apple is seeking India’s help to reduce its dependence on China for the production of iPhones. The Make in India iPhone program started a few years ago, and now you have the latest iPhone 15 models being assembled in the country. But soon, we might see the company making camera modules for iPhones in India as well, thanks to its reported partnerships with local vendors. Apple is in talks with the Murugappa Group and Tata’s Titan to help them make sub-components for the iPhone camera, as quoted by media in its report this week.
Interestingly, Apple wants to use India for assembling and gradually build a manufacturing base in the country. The names mentioned in the report allow Apple to benefit from local subsidies and create job opportunities in various states. The report also points out that Apple wants to finalize the negotiations in the next six months and start the process by initially assembling these components and later training the setup and employees to manufacture the parts as well. The Murugappa Group has reportedly acquired the camera module maker, putting them at the top of the choice list for the iPhone maker when it decides to make a final call later this year.
Titan is equally adept at handling the demands of mass production but its limited expertise in imaging tech can work against it, especially when it comes time to build those components from scratch. Apple is eyeing the manufacturing benefits the Indian government is offering if the companies work together with local players. Sourcing local components also helps Apple reduce its duty costs which could directly benefit consumers who can expect iPhone prices to drop in India over the next few years.
