Asteroid Alert: 440-Foot Giant Asteroid To Pass Earth At 53855kmph
A massive building-sized space rock, the Asteroid 2019 CC5 is speeding towards the Earth at a close distance. But why do scientists study asteroids?
NASA suggests that studying asteroids is crucial for encompassing both scientific understanding and potential planetary defense. Asteroids provide a window into the early solar system, offering insights into the conditions and processes that led to the formation of planets. By analysing their composition, scientists can know the mysteries of the solar system’s origin. Moreover, asteroids represent a potential threat to Earth, with the potential for catastrophic impacts.
Understanding their trajectories, compositions, and structural characteristics is vital for developing strategies to mitigate or prevent collisions, safeguarding our planet from potential disasters. So, what about this upcoming giant space rock detected by NASA? Is it potentially hazardous and will it impact the Earth? Have a look here.
Asteroid 2019 CC5: Overview
This 440-foot building-sized near-Earth object is hurtling towards Earth at a furious speed of 53855 kilometres per hour. The space rock will make its closest approach to Earth tomorrow, February 4, 2024, passing at a close distance of 4.56 million miles. Asteroid 2019 CC5 has captured the attention of astronomers and scientists for its size and, more importantly, its potential to pose a threat to our planet. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) has classified the Asteroid 2019 CC5 as a Potentially Hazardous Asteroid (PHA) due to its huge size and close distance towards the Earth i.e., within 4.6 million miles.
