Attention Bike and Scooter Riders! New Traffic Rule Enforced from Today

Attention all bike and scooter riders! As of September 1, a significant change in traffic regulations has been implemented. Under the Motor Vehicles Act, it is now mandatory for pillion riders (those sitting behind the driver on a two-wheeler) to wear a helmet. This new rule has come into effect in Visakhapatnam, where passengers on bikes and scooters must wear helmets, as per the High Court’s directive. Failure to comply with this regulation will result in a fine of ₹1,035, and in some cases, the rider’s license may be suspended for three months.

Helmet Enforcement: A Step Towards Road Safety

Despite the existing laws, many individuals across India still do not wear helmets while riding two-wheelers, leading to severe accidents and fatalities. To address this growing concern, the government has enforced this new rule in Visakhapatnam. Now, anyone riding as a pillion must wear a helmet.

Penalties for Non-Compliance

Visakhapatnam’s Police Commissioner, Shankha Brata Bagchi, along with District Collector and District Road Safety Committee Chairman, Harendhira Prasad, discussed the implementation of this rule during a recent meeting. They emphasized that individuals who do not comply with this rule will face strict penalties.

According to the Visakhapatnam police, violators of this new regulation will be fined ₹1,035, and their driving license could be suspended for up to three months. Additionally, the helmet used must be of good quality and carry the ISI mark. If someone is found using a substandard helmet merely to avoid fines, further action will be taken against them.

Importance of Wearing a Helmet

Wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler is essential for your safety. Helmets protect your head in case of an accident, significantly reducing the risk of severe injuries. It is strongly advised to avoid using low-quality helmets just to avoid fines, as these may not provide adequate protection. A decent helmet can be purchased for around ₹1,000, so it is wise to invest in a good one rather than opting for cheaper alternatives that cost ₹300-₹400.
