Blood In Urine To Frequent Urination, How Does UTI Affect Men?

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is more common in females but do you know that it can happen in males as well? But why is UTI common in females and not males?

A research stated, about 10 in 25 women and 3 in 25 men have symptoms of UTI during their lifetime. Let’s know the reasons why it is uncommon in men from a doctor. According to Harvard, Most cases of urinary tract infections occur in women. Of those that occur in men, relatively few affect younger men.

To understand more about UTI in males, OnlyMyHealth team interacted with Dr Nitin Shrivastava, Sr. Consultant- Urology, Kidney Transplant Program & Robotic Surgery, Artemis Hospital, Gurugram.

Explaining why UTI is not as common in males as females, Dr Shrivastava said, “UTI in males can happen from a Sexually Transmitted Infection and requires treatment by antibiotics.

In case of males as well as females, UTI happens due to the bacteria entering the urinary tract, typically through the urethra. However, in case of men, UTI is less likely to happen because they have a longer urethra in comparison to females which makes it difficult for bacteria to reach the bladder.

UTI can also be linked with complications like prostatitis or epididymitis. Furthermore, UTIs in men can also be a sign of underlying urinary tract problems or prostate issues.”
