Businessman celebrates wedding anniversary with wife at Rajasthan hotel, then strangles her
Dungarpur: A Gujarat-based businessman allegedly strangulated his wife on their wedding anniversary and later tried to end his life too.
The incident took place in Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district on Monday. The accused, Akshay Sikligar, a resident of Ramol in Ahmedabad, runs a travel agency. He allegedly took the extreme step as he was debt-ridden, police said.
The couple had a debt of Rs 26 lakh and they decided to end their lives in despair. They had initially planned to hang themselves to death at a hotel in Dungarpur. However, since the bid was unsuccessful, the man strangled his wife before slitting his wrist. Bleeding profusely, the man went to the Bichhiwada police station to surrender and narrated the entire incident. He was later taken to hospital by police for treatment.
During interrogation, Akshay told the police that he and his wife Jyoti Sikligar decided to die by suicide due to pressure of debt and checked into a hotel in Rajasthan for this purpose. The accused also informed them that his wife’s body was lying inside room number 702 of the hotel near Ratanpur border. Subsequently, a police team reached the hotel and found the woman’s body lying on the bed.
Ordered food, celebrated wedding anniversary before suicide attempt
Police interrogation revealed that the young man has a travel agency in Gujarat but his entire family was upset due to loss in business. On February 5, on their wedding anniversary, both the husband and wife together planned to die by suicide. For this, they took a room in a hotel in Rajasthan and also ordered food at night. They celebrated their anniversary before attempting suicide. The duo tried to end their life by hanging themselves but could not succeed. Then Jyoti’s husband strangled her with a scarf and attempted suicide by slitting both his wrists.
Police found two separate suicide notes written by the couple in Gujarati language from the hotel room. The couple mentioned in the letters that they were worried about an outstanding debt and therefore they were taking their own lives. Police also recovered ID cards from the incident spot and sealed the hotel room.
