Cillian Murphy to reprise Tommy Shelby role in Peaky Blinders film, reveals series creator

Fresh off his first Oscar win for Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy is set to return as Tommy Shelby in a new Peaky Blinders film. Series creator Steven Knight announced the news at the premiere of his latest drama series The Town for BBC, revealing that filming is scheduled for September in Digbeth, England.

“He definitely is returning for it,” Knight said of Murphy. “We’re shooting it in September just down the road in Digbeth [England].”

Murphy, who led the popular British crime drama series as gang leader Tommy Shelby, has been open about his willingness to return for a Peaky Blinders film if the script was right. Knight also expressed his interest in pursuing the project.

In a 2022 interview with Esquire, Knight said, “The film, I know exactly what it’s about. And I know what two stories it’s going to tell. What will happen after that, I want that to depend on the film. For all we know somebody is going to pop out – I think I know who it’s going to be.”

Originally airing on BBC Two before moving to BBC One and later Netflix, Peaky Blinders follows the Birmingham gang in the aftermath of World War I. The series ran for six seasons between 2013 and 2022, garnering a massive fan base and critical acclaim.

Murphy has been enjoying a career high following his portrayal of the theoretical physicist behind the atomic bomb in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. His performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor, along with a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and other accolades.

Murphy’s latest film, the Irish drama Small Things Like These from Artists Equity, premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February to critical acclaim. He is now considered one of the most sought-after actors in the industry.
