The Secret Service told New York Post that the former president is safe. A campaign spokesperson also informed that Trump is fine and was checked out at a local medical facility.
“He came within inches of having his face shot open,” New York Post quoted a senior law enforcement source as saying.
The bullet may have been deflected by the glass before it struck the former US president in the face, New York Post reported citing law enforcement sources.
The incident will treated and be investigated as an assassination attempt on the former US President, AP reported citing sources.
Right before the much-anticipated Republican National Convention, Donald Trump was passionately presenting a chart of border crossing figures. However, an abrupt clamor threw the gathering into disarray. Instinctively, Trump darted behind the stage, shielded by his quick-to-react security personnel. Among the scared throng of thousands, the din persisted even as the security staff rushed to protect Trump on the stage.
As soon as Trump stepped down from the stage, the police started evacuating the fairgrounds. Security whisked him away, and he defiantly raised a fist to his onlookers in the midst of it all.
The secret service spokesperson gave updates about the incident and posted a statement on X. “An incident occurred the evening of July 13 at a Trump rally in Pennsylvania. The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former President is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and further information will be released when available,” said Anthony Guglielmi.
Hours after the incident, Donald Trump released a statement stating that he is “fine”.
In a statement Steven Cheung, a spokesperson for the former president, expressed gratitude to law enforcement and emergency personnel for their swift response during this incident. “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act. He is fine and is being checked out at a local medical facility. More details will follow,” said Cheung.
Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has been briefed about the shooting incident. In a statement, Biden said he is “glad to hear Trump is safe” and also offered prayers for Donald Trump.
In a statement on X Biden said, ” I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
“I’ve been thoroughly briefed by all the agencies in the federal government as to the situation based on what we know now, I have tried to get hold of Donald, he’s with his doctors and doing well. I plan on talking to them shortly, I hope when I get back to the telephone. Look, there’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick. It’s one of the reasons why we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this. And so, I want to thank the Secret Service and all the agencies, including the state agencies. I don’t have all that detail. We’ll make that available to you. The bottom line is that the Trump rally should have been able to be conducted peacefully without any problems. But the idea that there’s political violence or violence in America like this is just unheard of. It’s just not appropriate. Everybody must condemn it. I’ll keep you informed, and if I am able to speak to Donald, I’ll let you know that as well. But so far it appears he’s doing well…” Biden said in a video message.
