Formula One Driver’s Stolen Ferrari Found After 28 Years

London’s Metropolitan Police have solved a long overdue case of a lost Ferrari. The exotic Ferrari 512M Testarossa was stolen from Austrian former Formula One driver, Gerhard Berger 28 years ago at the time of the 1995 San Marino Grand Prix at Imola.

Along with Berger, his teammate Jean Alesi’s car was also stolen from the hotel’s parking lot during a race. Reports suggest that Berger arrived at the site of the incident while the thief was driving away in his luxurious sports car.

London’s Metropolitan Police initiated a probe in January to find the whereabouts of the Ferrari. The 512M was found with the help of the manufacturer who had inspected the car on behalf of an American customer who was purchasing the car from a broker in the United Kingdom.

After investigation, the police found out that the car was shipped to Japan after it was stolen in London. It came back to the UK in late 2023. This is when the Metropolitan Police impounded the Ferrari to prevent the vehicle from getting shipped again.

“We worked quickly with partners including the National Crime Agency, as well as Ferrari and international car dealerships, and this collaboration was instrumental in understanding the vehicle’s background and stopping it from leaving the country,” Mike Pilbeam in the Metropolitan Police’s announcement after Ferrari’s recovery.
