Google Chrome users beware! This malware can disguise itself as Chrome to steal your photos, passwords
The internet can be a dangerous space for those unaware. There are various threat actors out there who want to steal users’ data for various purposes.
This is why staying safe while browsing the web is considered essential. With that being said, a new malware is being reported that targets Android users and disguises itself as Google Chrome, one of the most popular search engines used across the globe. If you are also a regular Chrome user on an Android device, read on to know about this dangerous new malware and take steps to protect yourself against it.
New malware disguised as Google Chrome reported
Recent findings from cybersecurity experts reveal a significant threat to mobile security, especially for Google Chrome users on Android. An advanced version of the Android XLoader malware, associated with the threat actor ‘Roaming Mantis,’ has been reported and the most concerning part of it is that it can execute itself without user interaction.
The malware, as per reports, spreads through SMS texts containing shortened URLs, redirecting users to a page where they’re prompted to download an Android installation file (APK) for what seems like a harmless mobile app.
McAfee researchers, as reported by BleepingComputer, have highlighted the malware’s evolution. This new variant can not only infiltrate devices but can also automatically activate itself after installation. Pretending to be ‘Chrome’ with a stylized ‘r,’ the malware tricks users into granting it continuous background running privileges. It also urges users to set it as the default SMS application, using messages in multiple languages.
The malware can autonomously perform malicious actions, compromising sensitive information like passwords, messages, photos, contacts, and crucial hardware details.
