Through his couplets, he worked to show the right path to the people. Let us know about some important things related to the birth and life of Saint Ravidas.
Who was Saint Ravidas?
Guru Ravidas ji was born in Samvat 1433 on the full moon day of Magh month in a low caste family, in Seer Goverdhanpur, UP. Saint Ravidas’s father’s name was Raghu or Raghavdas and his mother’s name was Karma Bai. Saint Ravidas also had a sister whose name was Ravidasini. Saint Ravidas’s father was a cobbler who made leather shoes.
Like his father, Ravidas ji also adopted his ancestral work and worked at it with full dedication. But while he worked hard at his ancestral work he also became deeply devoted to God. His devotion to God was deeply ingrained in his mind and he made his work a medium of serving the saints.
He was among the first people to fight for basic human rights and tried to spread the message of equality by opposing the Indian caste system. He taught spirituality and contributed 41 devotional poems and songs to Guru Granth Sahib. It is believed that his teachings were studied by Sikh Gurus as well.
