Hema Committee Report: Mohanlal Speaks Out on AMMA Resignation Amid Sexual Assault Allegations: ‘I Have Not Fled Anywhere’
Malayalam actor and filmmaker Mohanlal has finally addressed the allegations made against him following the release of the Hema Committee Report. Responding to the matter, Mohanlal stated, “Wrongdoers should be punished if there is evidence against them.” For the unversed, after the release of the report, the actor stepped down from his position as President of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA).
Welcoming the Hema Committee Report, Mohanlal said that the Kerala government’s decision to release the report was the right one. However, the veteran actor noted that AMMA cannot address all the questions related to the sexual abuse allegations. Mohanlal, as quoted by news agency ANI, said, “We request you not to put all the focus on AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists). An investigation is ongoing. Please don’t destroy the industry.”
“We welcome the Hema Committee Report. It was the right decision by the government to release it. AMMA cannot answer all the questions. These questions should be asked of everyone. This is a very hardworking industry, and many people are involved in it. But everyone cannot be blamed for this. Those responsible will be punished,” the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awardee actor added.
What is the Hema Committee Report?
On August 20, 2024, the over 200-page Hema Committee Report was released, highlighting the male dominance in the Malayalam film industry. The report revealed a network of 15 prominent individuals, including directors, producers, and actors, who are allegedly involved in cases of sexual harassment.
According to the revelations made by the committee, there is a group of men who dictate the entire industry in terms of who will be cast in films. The report states, “The Malayalam film industry is controlled by certain producers, directors, and actors—all male. They control the industry and wield power over others in the film business.”
