iPhone 16 Flip: Leaked Design Hints at a Classic Camera Comeback

According to a new leak, Apple’s alleged iPhone 16 series may feature an improved rear camera design. A leaked image showing the iPhone 16’s camera module suggests that it could be the first model since the iPhone 12 to sport a vertically positioned camera on the back. Additionally, an unverified leak shows that the iPhone 16 lineup will include five models, with the iPhone “Plus SE” model potentially replacing the current 6.7-inch Plus model.

Vertical camera can be found in iPhone 16, 16 Plus

An image shared by X user Majin Bu suggests that the iPhone 16 will have a vertical camera layout, which supports some earlier reports. Tech publication MacRumors has independently confirmed the authenticity of the I-34 Camera Project component through industry sources. “This will be the iPhone 16’s new camera module, as you can see vertical positioning is confirmed,” Majin Buu posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The vertical camera placement at the rear is said to enhance features like special video recording. Currently, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max can record special video, a format that captures depth information for immersive viewing in compatible headsets like Apple Vision Pro. This capability relies on a vertically aligned camera, which is present on Pro models with their triple-camera setup, but absent on non-Pro models.

By reintroducing the vertical camera layout to the base iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, Apple is likely to expand the spatial video recording feature to these models, making it more accessible to a wider audience. In addition to enabling spatial video, vertical camera layouts offer several other advantages. It can accommodate a larger sensor, improve low-light performance and image sharpness. Additionally, this arrangement could create additional space for additional camera modules, potentially facilitating future camera upgrades for non-Pro iPhone models.
