IPL 2024: KKR’s Varun Chakravarthy Calls for Bowlers to Embrace Impact Player Rule
KKR beat DC by 7 wickets at the Eden Gardens to cement their position at the second spot in the Indian Premier League table. The game was one of the rare matches in IPL 2024 where the 200-run barrier was not breached in any innings, with KKR’s bowlers running away from the DC side in the first half of the game. Mystery spinner Varun Chakraborty was adjudged player of the match for his 3/16 spell.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Chakraborty elaborated on the impact player rule and said other bowlers should stop whining about it. RCB’s Mohammad Siraj has been vocal about the rule, arguing that it is making life difficult for bowlers and all-rounders in the IPL. Critics have also questioned the need for this rule as it is not followed in international cricket.
“Somewhere we have to accept that this IPL is different and we have to move on. There were impact players last season, the main thing is that teams have used them better this season. They want to take charge from the start, how much the bowlers cry. , you have to rise to the challenge,” Varun Chakraborty said after KKR’s win against DC. Asked about the KKR bowling line-up that produced a sensational turnaround in fortunes after the epic loss against PBKS, Chakraborty said the team was happy with the way it bowled in the first innings of the game. DC captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bat first at Eden Gardens, essentially deciding the fate of the visiting side.
The spinner said, “The wickets have become very quiet in the second innings. Certainly, the bowling was good in the first innings, the pitch helped a bit. This pitch was a bit more turning, in other matches it didn’t help that much.” Said in the press conference after the match. “The last match was a very difficult pill to swallow. We had a conversation with the management, the bowling coach. SRK came to me yesterday and spoke to me personally, he said, ‘Whatever is happening in the IPL, he Don’t take it personally, don’t doubt yourself’,” Chakraborty revealed of Shah Rukh Khan’s heart-warming gesture after the PBKS game.
The spinner said that one of the main reasons behind the difficulty in bowling is the humidity in Kolkata as the ball is very difficult to catch. “Fingers are starting to sweat in this high humidity, which was not the case in the last few years, but I don’t want to use that as an excuse,” Varun concluded.
