Jeethu Joseph weighs in on whether Drishyam is a Hindi or Malayalam film

The Drishyam franchise is set to make waves once again as it gears up for a Hollywood remake. While there is the anticipation for its next watershed moment, debate around whether Drishyam belongs to Malayalam cinema or Hindi has been going on for a while among fans.

Now, the director of the original film Jeethu Joseph has addressed the whole argument.

The original Malayalam masterpiece, starring the legendary Mohanlal, became a blockbuster hit. However, since the release of its Hindi adaptation in 2015, Drishyam has become to be known as Bollywood star Ajay Devgn’s movie.

Addressing the ongoing debate, Jeethu Joseph expressed his elation at the rare honor of having his creation remade in Hollywood. He was quoted as saying, ‘As a filmmaker, I am extremely excited and happy that a film I created is being remade in Hollywood. The film deals with a universal subject. It is a story of family love and security, more than a crime thriller, which is why it has so much appeal among people of different languages.’

Some of the Hindi films, which were remade in Malayalam and other languages, were more popular than the original. That said and done, those who have watched and loved the movie know the original film starring Mohanlal was directed by me,’ the director added.

The Hindi remake, helmed by late director Nishikant Kamat, saw Ajay Devgn and Tabu stepping into the lead roles, with Tabu emulating the character portrayed by Asha Sharath in the original.
