Kamya Panjabi Says Hindi TV Industry is ‘Very Safe Place’ Amid Ongoing Hema Committee Case
Ever since the Justice Hema Committee Report revealed serious allegations of sexual harassment in the Malayalam and Tamil film industries, leading to numerous actresses speaking out about their experiences. This has sparked a widespread conversation about the prevalence of such issues in the entertainment industry. In response to these allegations, TV actress Kamya Panjabi has defended the Hindi television industry. She described TV as the “safest” industry, claiming that sexual abuse and casting couch practices do not occur there. She stated that television has become much cleaner over time and insisted that people are not forced or blackmailed into compromising situations.
Kamya told News18 Showsha, “Television has been very clean. I don’t know what used to happen in the past but now it is very clean. There is no such filth here. People aren’t forced or blackmailed here. There is no casting couch. If you fit a role, you have talent, you will be selected for the show. I feel television is the safest place in the entertainment industry. Sexual abuse does not happen here. Whatever happens, because there is mutual consent. Nobody is telling anyone to sleep with them in the promise of a role”.
Kamya acknowledged that while some actors might be “womanisers,” she emphasised that any interactions in the TV industry are consensual. She claimed that if someone is uncomfortable with an advance, it is respected, and no one is forced into anything. According to her, mutual consent is a key factor in the television world, and any unwanted behaviour is promptly addressed. “Some actors are womanisers but if you stop it, if you make it very clear, such things do not happen. Nobody is being forced to do this. Aisa nahi hai ke aapko haath lagaya jaaega aur aap uncomfortable feel karoge. If you tell them, ‘Hello, I don’t like it’, you will not be touched. We have seen actors who get crazy for girls but nobody forces nobody,” she said.
Reflecting on the past, Kamya admitted that sexual abuse did happen in the earlier days of her career but asserted that it no longer occurs. She mentioned that relationships sometimes form between actors, but this is a matter of mutual consent and not coercion. She believes it’s very safe place compared to other sectors of the entertainment industry.
