Actor Karisma Kapoor recently revealed that her name is pronounced “Karizzma,” and not as it is spelled.

She said that this pronunciation stems from her family’s British roots, and left her Murder Mubarak co-stars Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Sanjay Kapoor and Vijay Verma surprised.

At a roundtable discussion moderated by Neelesh Misra and shared on the Netflix India YouTube channel, Karisma was asked what the right way to pronounce her name is, and she said, “Karizzma,” as in ‘charisma’ and not “Karishma” as in ‘miracle’. Reacting with surprise, Pankaj Tripathi said, “Mujhe toh aaj hi pata chala (I had no idea),” and Sara Ali Khan said, “But you never corrected anybody ever!” Karisma replied, “Because now it’s been forever, call me what you like,” and Sara retorted, “But we just found out your name, that’s strange.”

Karisma also revealed that she and her sister Kareena Kapoor have British roots, as their grandmother (their mother Babita’s mother, Barbara) was of British origin. She said, “Growing up, we had a club culture.

My nani (maternal grandmother) was a British, so my grandmother and grandfather would always go to the club in beautiful sarees and a pearl necklace. We would also go along with them. In a certain way, I have seen that culture. There were a lot of rules, there used to be a card room where kids were not allowed, so we used to peep into the room to see what’s happening over there, which aunty comes carrying what kind of bag.”

Babita, Karisma and Kareena’s mother, was born in Karachi to actor Hari Shivdasani, who had settled in Mumbai prior to and after the partition of India. He was married to Barbara Shivdasani.
