Kate Middleton’s six words to her children while disclosing cancer treatment
As Kate Middleton announced that she was undergoing treatment for cancer, ending days of speculation about her health, the Princess of Wales highlighted how she took time to explain the situation to her three children before going public with her diagnosis.
Middleton has three children — Prince George (10), Princess Charlotte (8), and Prince Louis (5) — with Prince William. In a video message, Kate narrated how she and her husband broke the news gently to their kids. “I am going to be ok,” Kate said, were her first words to her children.
“As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok,” the future Queen said.
The Princess of Wales also mentioned that having William by her side was a great source of “comfort and reassurance”. The statement comes amid speculation about Prince William’s alleged affair with Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley.
“As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you,” Middleton said.
A report in The Mirror said Prince William learnt about his wife’s cancer diagnosis when he was attending a memorial service for his godfather King Constantine of Greece at Windsor Castle on February 27. The Prince then pulled out of the event, where he was supposed to make a statement.
In January, when Middleton announced her abdominal surgery, a statement by Kensington Palace asked the public to “maintain as much normality for her children as possible”.
“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible, and her wish that her personal medical information remains private,” the statement said.
A report said Prince William also kept aside royal duties for several weeks as he helped his wife and kept things as normal as possible in the routines of their children.
Middleton is the third member of the UK’s Royal family to be diagnosed with cancer, following King Charles and Sarah, Duchess of York.
After the video of Princess Kate, King Charles said that he was “so proud” of the Princess of Wales for her strength in going public with her cancer diagnosis.
