Kutty Padmini Flags Sexual Abuse In Tamil Industry: ‘Situation is Bad, Not Let My Daughters…’
The recent report released by the Hema Committee has caused a significant uproar in the Malayalam film industry. Following the revelations made in the report, several actresses have come forward to share their experiences of sexual harassment during their careers. Amid this, actor Vishal—who also serves as the general secretary of the South Indian Artists’ Association (SIAA)—has called for a similar committee to be established in the Tamil film industry. After Vishal’s proposal, actress Shakeela and Kutty Padmini have opened up about their sexual experience.
TV actress Kutti Padmini also opened up about her harrowing experiences. During an interview with NDTV, she revealed how directors have asked her for sexual favours. She also said that when it comes to small screens, several directors ask for sexual favours from actresses.
In a recent YouTube interview with Galatta, Shakeela compared various Indian film industries, highlighting that sexual harassment against women is particularly severe in the Telugu film industry. She emphasised that women’s safety is an escalating concern and called for strict punishment for offenders. Shakeela pointed out that many women remain silent about their experiences due to family considerations. She also urged the governing bodies of the film industries to take action and find solutions to address these issues.
Meanwhile, during a media interaction, Vishal said, “People who misbehave with women should be hit with slippers.” He also expressed concern over the situations women face in Kerala. The actor added, “I was asked: Is there no one to address the suffering of Tamil actresses? I want to reassure them that we (SIAA) are here, and we won’t let the wrongdoers go unpunished.”
Vishal further stated, “The Nadigar Sangam will form a committee in the next ten days. Preparations are underway, and an announcement will be made soon. It is our duty to do so. The association is not just for the men in the industry; it’s also for women to know that there is someone to support them.”
What is the Hema Committee Report?
On August 20, 2024, the over 200-page Hema Committee report was released, exposing the male dominance in the Malayalam film industry. The report discussed a circle of 15 significant figures, including directors, producers, and actors, who are allegedly involved in cases of sexual harassment.
According to the report, this group dictates who remains in the Malayalam industry and who gets cast in films. It states, “The Malayalam film industry is controlled by certain producers, directors, and actors—all male. They control the industry and wield power over others in the film business.”
