Maharashtra government implements school start times of 9 am or later to prioritise students’ health
Starting from the academic year 2024-’25, pre-primary and primary classes in Maharashtra will commence no earlier than 9 am, as mandated by the State school education department.
A Government Resolution (GR) issued on Thursday directs all schools, regardless of their board affiliation, to schedule classes for pre-primary to class 4 to begin at 9 am or later.
The GR underscores the necessity of this change in light of evolving lifestyles, highlighting concerns about insufficient sleep leading to both physical and mental health issues among children due to late nights.
In December 2023, Governor Ramesh Bais advocated for a revision of school timings during the inauguration of various schemes by the school education department. He remarked, ‘Sleep patterns have shifted for many individuals in recent times. Numerous children stay awake past midnight yet must rise early for school. This results in inadequate sleep, necessitating adjustments to school timings.’
‘Recognising the importance of sleep for overall well-being and academic performance, the initiative by Maharashtra Government aims to prioritise the health and rest of students. Many studies have shown that lack of sleep can lead to various issues such as decreased cognitive function, poor concentration, and even mental health problems.
By adjusting school timings, the government hopes to create an environment that supports students’ sleep patterns and allows them to be more alert and focused during school hours,’ Maithili Tambe, CEO of The Academy School (TAS),Pune, said.
