Devotees observe a fast on this auspicious day while also worshipping Lord Shiva and Maa Gauri. This is said to fulfill all their wishes and remove all their troubles. On this day unmarried girls also observe a fast to get a suitable and desired life partner. Mythological stories related to Mahashivratri
Mahadev was married to Goddess Sati, daughter of Daksh Prajapati. Daksh did not like Shiva, hence he never accepted Mahadev as his son-in-law. Once Daksh Prajapati organized a huge yagya in which he invited everyone except Lord Shiva and Maa Sati. When Maa Sati came to know about this, she was very sad but still decided to go there. Even after Mahadev tried to explain to her but Maa Sati did not listen to him and reached her father’s house to participate in the Yagya. Seeing Sati at the yagya, Prajapati Daksh became very angry and started insulting Bholenath.
