Malayalam Actor Baburaj Faces New Charge of Sexual Assault by Junior Artist Amid Hema Committee Report
The recent Hema Committee Report has put the Malayalam Film industry, Mollywood, under fire. New allegations of sexual assault have surfaced against famous Malayalam actor and producer Baburaj. A junior artiste, who chose to remain anonymous, has claimed that the actor invited her to his home in lieu of offering a role.
“When I reached his home only Baburaj and his assistant was there. He gave me a room to take rest, however, after a while, he knocked at the door. When I opened the door, he got into the room and closed the door, used some abusive words and attacked me and sexually abused me. I didn’t complain to anybody then because he’s a famous actor and I didn’t have support from anyone,” the woman told News18.
However, the producer has denied any such allegation.
Hema Committee Report
The report by the Justice Hema Committee, constituted by the Kerala government post the 2017 actress assault case, has revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam film industry, prompting calls for action against the guilty.
Rocked by the Justice K Hema Committee’s explosive findings of harassment and abuse of women professionals, the Malayalam film industry on Sunday witnessed two high-profile resignations related to the issues.
Director Ranjith stepped down as chairman of state-run film academy Kerala Chalachitra Academy and actor Siddique resigned as general secretary of A.M.M.A (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists).
Even as political pressure was building against Ranjith, actor Siddique resigned from A.M.M.A. amid voices from within his fraternity seeking his resignation.
