Medical miracle: In a first, surgeons successfully transplant pig kidney into patient
In a surprising incident, surgeons in Boston successfully transplanted a pig kidney into a 62-year-old patient. As per reports, it is the first time that a genetically developed pig kidney has been transplanted into a living human being.
Earlier to this, there have been cases in which the pig kidneys have been transplanted into brain-dead donors for a temporary time period. Also, there are two men who received heart transplants from pigs but they both died within months. This was an experimental transplant procedure conducted at the Boston Hospital on Saturday.
According to the doctors, the patient is recovering well and is anticipated to be discharged soon, the report noted. The history of the patient who had the kidney transplant goes back to 2018 when he had a transplant but he had to go through a dialysis last year when it started showing signs of failure.
As per a statement released by the hospital, the complications of the dialysis began and this was the time when the doctors suggested him to get a pig kidney.
