‘More to life than just fulfilling desires like violence, sex’: AR Rahman’s statement in first appearance after divorce with Saira Banu goes viral
Days after AR Rahman’s ex-wife Saira Banu announced the separation from the ace musician, a recent statement by Rahman has taken over social media, where he emphasised that there is more to life than violence and physical intimacy. Read on.
AR Rahman’s first statement after divorce goes viral
Rahman touched on the topic of mental health, highlighting how many people grapple with depression and a sense of emptiness. He proposed that this empty space can be filled not by temporary distractions, but through the transformative power of storytelling, philosophy, and entertainment that brings healing—often without us even realising it. Rahman emphasised that life holds much more depth than merely satisfying primal urges like violence and sex, urging people to seek fulfillment through more meaningful avenues.
Earlier this year, AR Rahman candidly shared his journey of overcoming suicidal thoughts during a conversation with Oxford Union students. He recalled how his mother once told him, “When you live for others, you won’t have these thoughts,” and how this advice changed his life. Rahman explained that living selflessly gives life meaning. He also shared how simple acts of kindness, like composing music or sharing food, can help people keep going. Rahman added that the uncertainty of the future offers hope, motivating him even when he feels stuck.
In the same talk, Rahman discussed spirituality, recognising that everyone faces difficult moments. He described life as a short journey, where we are born and eventually pass away. He highlighted that what happens after life is unknown and varies depending on each person’s beliefs and imagination.
AR Rahman-Saira Banu divorce statement
For the unversed, AR Rahman and Saira Banu have been married for 29 years before the couple filed for divorce. It was Saira’s lawyer who released the statement on behalf of her party. The statement read, “After many years of marriage, Mrs. Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband Mr. A R. Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs. Saira emphasised that she had taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life (sic).”
Hours later, Rahman on X (formerly known as Twitter) addressed the shocking news of the couple getting separated after almost three decades. Rahman’s statement read, “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”
