Mumbai Indians IPL 2024 Schedule: MI match dates timings, captain name, players list, venue
Mumbai Indians have taken a big step in handing over the captaincy to Hardik Pandya from India skipper Rohit Sharma for IPL 2024.
Mumbai have said the decision was taken with an eye on the future, though it’s the present that could unravel because of it.
Pandya was brought in for a mega trade deal from Gujarat Titans, after leading them to the title on debut in 2022 and runners-up last year.
To accommodate the all-rounder, Mumbai had to part with Cameron Green, trading him to Royal Challengers Bangalore.
Pandya returns after making his name at Mumbai, but the dynamics have vastly changed since he was a greenhorn trying to make a mark.
Five-time champions Mumbai are a demanding franchise, where Pandya will have to fit in and fire straightaway, having displaced skipper Rohit certainly adds to the tension in the dressing room.
There are talks of an internal revolt after he was brought on as captain with long-serving players like Suryakumar and Jasprit Bumrah feeling shortchanged in the bargain.
Wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan also didn’t win any favours after refusing to play Ranji Trophy matches and losing his BCCI central contract.
They have brought in South African tearaway Gerald Coetzee in place of the injured Jofra Archer along with Sri Lanka’s Dilshan Madushanka and Nuwan Thushara makes the Jasprit Bumrah-led pace attack formidable.
Mohammad Nabi is another addition though the lack of wicket-taking spinners could hold them back in the middle overs.
But their season hinges on how the team’s senior players accept Pandya the captain, as a week after the tournament Rohit will captain Pandya at the T20 World Cup.
