Olivia Munn reveals she had breast cancer, underwent double mastectomy
In a heartfelt social media post, actress Olivia Munn disclosed she had been battling breast cancer for the past one year. The 43-year-old star, known for her roles in movies like X-Men: Apocalypse and Magic Mike, shared her story on Instagram, emphasising the importance of early detection and expressing gratitude for the support she received.
“I hope by sharing this it will help others find comfort, inspiration, and support on their own journey,” Munn said in her social media post, alongside photos capturing moments from her hospital bed and with her medical team.
Munn revealed that she received her diagnosis last year. A series of medical procedures followed over the past ten months, including a double mastectomy. Despite the challenges she faced, Munn maintained an optimistic outlook, aiming to provide solace and inspiration to others confronting similar battles.
The actress disclosed that her cancer diagnosis came as a shock, especially since earlier tests had shown negative results for cancer genes and a normal mammogram also indicated nothing. However, a proactive decision by her doctor to conduct a risk assessment ultimately led to the detection of an aggressive form of breast cancer.
“I went from feeling completely fine one day, to waking up in a hospital bed after a 10-hour surgery the next. I’m lucky. We caught it with enough time that I had options,” Munn added, thanking her doctors for saving her life.
“I’ve tended to let people see me when I have energy, when I can get dressed and get out of the house, when I can take my baby boy to the park. I’ve kept the diagnosis and the worry and the recovery and the pain medicine and the paper gowns private. I needed to catch my breath and get through some of the hardest parts before sharing,” she wrote, about her decision to finally share the news with the world.
During this physical and emotional struggle, Munn said she found strength in the unwavering support of her partner, comedian John Mulaney, “for being there before I went into each surgery and being there when I woke up, always placing framed photos of our little boy Malcolm so it would be the first thing I saw when I opened my eyes.” Munn and Mulaney had their son Malcolm in late 2021.
Munn was seen on the Oscars red carpet on Sunday with Mulaney.
