PM Narendra Modi, Mauritian counterpart inaugurate airstrip, jetty at Agalega Island in Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart Pravind Jugnauth on Thursday jointly inaugurated the new airstrip and St. James Jetty, along with six community development projects, at Mauritius’ Agalega Island on Thursday.

The event was held through video conferencing, read a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

The inauguration of these multiple projects is a testimony to the robust and decades-old development partnership between the two nations, India and Mauritius.

As per the official statement, these projects will help in fulfilling the demand for better connectivity between mainland Mauritius and Agalega. Further, it will strengthen maritime security and foster socio-economic development, the PMO said.

The inauguration of these development projects holds great significance in the region as it follows the launch of UPI and RuPay Card services in Mauritius by the two leaders a few weeks ago.

On February 12, Prime Minister Modi, along with Jugnauth and Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, launched the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius, along with the RuPay card services in Mauritius via video conferencing.

While addressing the event, the Mauritian PM said that co-branded RuPay cards will be designated as domestic cards in the country.
