Pregnancy in summers: Gynaecologist shares tips for expectant mothers

As the summer season sets in, it brings its own difficulties and health issues. When it comes to pregnancy during summer, the heat and temperature can make one feel very uncomfortable and uneasy.

Moreover, regardless of the season, pregnant women usually feel warmer as compared to others. This is due to the hormone progesterone, during pregnancy increases the body temperature which in turn increases the body temperature and rapid mood changes. This eventually leads to hormonal alterations and increased blood volume.

Dr Rujul Jhaveri Consultant Gynaecologist, NH-SRCC Children’s Hospital, Mumbai told News9, “As the temperatures rise and the sun shines brighter, expectant mothers face unique challenges during summer pregnancies. The importance of staying cool, hydrated, and healthy during this crucial time cannot be overstated.”

Here are some essential tips to help mothers-to-be breeze through the summer months:

1. Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can lead to complications such as an increase in body temperatures and the risk of preterm labour. Pregnant women should aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, and more if they’re spending time outdoors or exercising.

2. Dress Light: Opt for loose, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton to allow air circulation and prevent overheating. Don’t forget to accessorize with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to shield yourself from the sun’s rays.

3. Sun Protection: Pregnant women are more susceptible to skin changes and sunburn. Apply a broad-spectrum pregnancy-safe sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher regularly, especially if spending time outdoors.
