Residents flee amid stench of death, shootings, kidnappings in Haiti
The stench of death, shootings, lootings, clashes with police, kidnappings and arson marked Tuesday in Haiti, prompting hundreds to evacuate to camps for displaced people to avoid becoming victims of armed gangs that impose terror in the country.
Heavily armed men broke into the premises of the Congrégation Saint-Joseph de Cluny, in the community of Madeline, kidnapping three nuns, some foreigners, as confirmed by the Haitian Conference of Religious (CHR). The city center smells like death. The surroundings of the civil prison give off a nauseating stench of decomposing corpses, some charred and others devoured by dogs.
In addition, schools and universities and some private and public institutions were closed again due to the violence, especially in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, despite the state of emergency and the curfew decreed on Sunday in Ouest department, where the capital is located.
