Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Captures Breathtaking Photos From Space: Here Are The Results

The ever-growing megapixel war and innovative camera features in smartphones have become a familiar marketing battleground. However, pushing the boundaries of mobile photography just reached new heights, literally.

In a daring and innovative marketing stunt, Samsung has sent four Galaxy S24 Ultra smartphones on a stratospheric balloon ride, capturing stunning images of the Earth from an altitude of 120,000 feet, or nearly 36.5 kilometres. This ambitious project not only showcases the capabilities of the S24 Ultra’s camera system but also offers a captivating glimpse of our planet from a unique perspective.

Samsung’s approach involved attaching the phones to specially designed lightweight carbon-fibre casings, each tethered to a stratospheric balloon filled with hydrogen. To capture diverse perspectives and utilise the full range of the S24 Ultra’s camera system, the phones were further secured within custom 3D mounts controlled by a flight computer. With this setup, Samsung aimed to capture a variety of landscapes and truly test the phone’s camera capabilities.

The balloons were launched from four strategically chosen locations across the western United States – Los Angeles, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, and the Sierra Nevada mountains – between January 25 and January 31, 2024. This selection aimed to capture the diversity of American landscapes and put the S24 Ultra’s camera to the test in various environments.
