Every year the festival of Basant Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh month. According to the Hindu calendar, this time the festival of Basant Panchami will be celebrated on Wednesday, 14 February 2024.
While this day is considered the end of the winter season and the beginning of spring season, on this day there is a tradition of worshipping Goddess Saraswati.
But why is Mother Saraswati worshiped only on the day of Basant Panchami? Let us find out the mythological belief related to this.
Relation between MaaSaraswati and Basant Panchami
It is believed that Mother Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge, was born on the day of Basant Panchami. Therefore, this festival is celebrated as her birth anniversary. According to a mythological story, when Lord Brahma created the world on the orders of Lord Vishnu, he found everything to be in order in the entire creation, but he saw that everyone looked silent, calm and sad. Then, with the aim of bringing about some change in the universe, he took out water from his Kamandal and sprinkled it upon his creation. As soon as the water was sprinkled, a beam of light revealed a goddess riding on a white swan. This was Maa Saraswati.
Glory of the divine form of Mother Saraswati
When Mother Saraswati appeared, she had four arms, and she was playing the Veena with two of her hands. Apart from this, she was holding a book in one hand and a pearl necklace in the other hand. On the request of Lord Brahma, Mother Saraswati played the Veena and provided speech to all living beings in the world. This goddess is therefore called the provider of knowledge and wisdom. The day on which Mother Saraswati Devi appeared was the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Magh month and the day of Basant Panchami. Therefore, Mother Saraswati is worshiped in every house on this day.
