According to information received from officials, the embankments of two major rivers have also broken due to heavy rainfall. He said that the state government has ordered all schools to remain closed till Thursday given the flood situation. At the same time, all government offices will remain closed on Wednesday.

More than 1,000 people affected

A senior official said that the Imphal River has broken its embankment in Singjamei Oinam Thingal in Imphal West and the Kongba River has broken its embankment in parts of Kongba Irong and Keirao in Imphal East. The Iril River is also in spate in parts of Sawombung and Chhetrigao in Imphal East. “The river water has entered residential areas in large quantities… More than 3 km stretch of India-Myanmar road has also been flooded and over 1,000 people have been affected,” he said.

Relief and rescue operations are on for the affected people, the official said. Meanwhile, the body of a 25-year-old man who fell into the Senapati River on Tuesday afternoon was recovered by a team of the Indian Red Cross Society with the help of locals, officials said. Many areas in the northeastern state have received heavy rains in the past few days.
