Vijayawada Heavy Rain
Tragically, nine lives were claimed by severe rainfalls, which started on the night of August 30th, in Vijayawada and Guntur districts, causing widespread landslides and floods. In the wee hours of Saturday, in Vijayawada’s Sunnambattelu area, five people- including three women, lost their lives while four others were luckily saved, though injured, after their houses gave way to a landslide. Among the deceased were three women named Nagalakshmi, 44, Meghana, 25, and Lakshmi, 45, from Vijayawada. Besides them, Santosh, a 22-year-old man from Gudlavalleru in the Krishna district, and Lalu, a 52-year-old man from West Bengal, also lost their lives. The injured have been rushed to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention, as confirmed by NTR district’s Collector, G. Srijana.
Authorities have sounded an alert for residents across multiple city neighborhoods including Gunadala, Moghalrajpuram, Bhavanipuram, Yenamalakuduru, Chittinagar, Kristurajupuram among others, cautioning them against staying in damaged homes in light of anticipated heavy rains. The community is advised to refrain from venturing outdoors in the rain unless it’s completely unavoidable. The Collector has shared plans to shift those living near hills and in low-lying areas to safe havens such as schools and community halls, prioritizing their safety.
