Shannen Doherty, Best Known for Series Beverly Hills, 90210, Dies at 53

American actor Shannen Doherty, known for her role in the hit 1990s television drama “Beverly Hills, 90210,” passed away at the age of 53. The actor died after years of living with cancer. The news of her demise was shared by People magazine.
“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” the magazine cited Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane as saying. Doherty had openly shared her battle with breast cancer, revealing in 2015 that she was undergoing treatment for the disease. In 2023, she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour and disclosed that the cancer had spread to her bones.
Shannen starred in films such as “Heathers.” However, the actor gained massive recognition after she appeared as Brenda, an honour roll student from Minnesota, in “90210.” People loved the triangle of Brenda with Dylan McKay and Kelly Taylor. Later in 1998, Doherty was cast by “90210” producer Aaron Spelling in the supernatural series “Charmed” as Prue Halliwell, the oldest of three sisters with magical abilities. While the show turned out to be a hit, it was embroiled in behind-the-scenes turmoil.
People magazine referred to Doherty as the ‘iconic bad girl’ of the nineties, highlighting her reputation for partying, arriving late on sets, and feuding with actors and her bosses.
In 2023, during a podcast called “Let’s Be Clear with Shannen Doherty,” the actor said that she took full responsibility for her actions and acknowledged her behaviour “would get a little carried away.”
“I was raised to have an opinion, and that my opinion should be valued, so I just kept on pressing up against that machine, up against men who didn’t really want to hear my opinion,” she said on the podcast.
Later, she added, “I learned the simple art of diplomacy. I learned that there might be a nicer way to say some things.”
