The University Grants Commission (UGC) has warned the public against fake online courses having abbreviations similar to recognized degrees. The officials said this while specifically mentioning the ‘10-Day MBA’ course. UGC Secretary Manish Joshi said, “Some individuals or organizations are offering online programs and courses with abbreviations similar to recognized degree programs of the higher education system. One such program to which the attention of the Commission has been drawn is Its ’10 Days MBA’.”
Who has the right to award degrees?
“The nomenclature of a degree, including its abbreviation, duration, and entry qualifications, is specified by the UGC, with the prior approval of the Central Government, by publication of a notification in the Official Gazette,” the UGC secretary said. Joshi clarified that only universities established or incorporated by or under a Central Act, Provincial Act, or State Act, or an institution deemed to be a university or institution specially empowered by an Act of Parliament, have the authority to confer degrees.
‘Check validity before taking admission’
Manish Joshi said, “Higher Education Institutions are also required to obtain approval from the UGC to offer any online degree program as per UGC regulations. Recognized HEIs (Higher Education Institutions) and permitted online A list of programs is available on the Commission’s website.” “Stakeholders are therefore advised to ensure the validity of any online program before applying or taking admission in it,” he said.
