Tech Giants Google and Microsoft Announce Layoffs Impacting 1,000 Employees
The tech layoffs will continue into 2024, with Google and Microsoft cutting as many as 1,000 jobs across various divisions of their teams. According to recent reports, Google Cloud Business has handed over pink slips to around 100 employees, while Microsoft has gone deeper into its decision by asking around 1,000 employees to exit the company. Both the companies are going through major changes as they lead to AI in their operations but still news of any major layoffs worries the market and that is the case this time as well.
GOOGLE CLOUD LAYOFFS
A media report points out that Google Cloud has cut its sales and engineering teams as it looks to reduce its operating budget. The total number of people laid off this month has reached 100, and Google cited that the layoffs are part of its focus on investing in business and critical businesses.
Google has already carried out multiple rounds of layoffs in various divisions in 2024, including some engineers who are being held at Google’s branches in India and Mexico, among others. Sundar Pichai recently spoke about these changes in an internal memo. Pichai also mentioned that the layoffs will taper off in the second half of 2024 but we are yet to see his words come true.
Microsoft sacks thousands
Microsoft seems to have gone further in its restructuring process and has laid off 1,000 employees from its mixed reality team. These employees were part of the HoloLens 2 development, and are part of the broader plans established by the company, as cited by the media in its report.
