Toyota Announces Plans to Introduce First Electric SUV in India by Late 2025
Toyota is preparing to launch its much-awaited midsize electric SUV in the Indian market, following the footsteps of its Maruti counterpart. After teasing us with an urban SUV concept last year, the Japanese automaker confirms that its electric Marvel will roll out six months after Maruti’s scheduled launch in March 2025. This means that as reported by Autocar, eager buyers can expect to see the production version in Indian showrooms around September to October 2025.
Measuring 4,300 mm in length, 1,820 mm in width and 1,620 mm in height, the Toyota urban SUV concept bears a striking resemblance to the Maruti eVX. Not only that, but both models are expected to sport the same 2,700mm wheelbase, ensuring a familiar yet robust design. Taking cues from its contemporary EV lineup, such as the bZ compact SUV concept, the urban SUV features edgy surfaces and distinctive C-shaped LED daytime running lamps. With its rugged appeal and flaring wheel arches, the SUV embodies a strikingly upright silhouette reminiscent of its Maruti counterpart. Additionally, the rear end bears a striking resemblance to the eVX, giving a sense of familiarity with its door and glass house design.
While Toyota is keeping the interior details under wraps, we can expect seamless integration of comfort and technology, mirroring the standards set by the eVX. With ample space and flexibility, thanks to its EV skateboard platform, the urban SUV promises a luxurious interior packed with creature comforts and advanced safety features.
Similar to Maruti’s strategy, Toyota’s electric offering will ride on the 27PL skateboard platform, which will be locally produced at Suzuki’s Gujarat facility for both the local and export markets.
Buyers can expect two battery pack options: a 60kWh unit offering a range of around 550km, which was showcased with the eVX concept, and the entry-level variant offering around 400km range equipped with a smaller 48kWh battery pack. Toyota also hints at offering both front-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive options for select markets. Upon its launch, Toyota’s mid-size electric SUV will face stiff competition from rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV and its sibling, the Maruti eVX.
