TRAI To Use This Feature To Fight Spam Calls In India: All Details

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recently proposed the implementation of Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) by telecom operators, aiming to provide users with the caller’s name and potentially combat spam calls.

While third-party services like Truecaller already offer caller name identification, the information is often crowd-sourced and may lack accuracy.

What is CNAP?

Caller Name Presentation (CNAP) is a service similar to Truecaller that displays the caller’s name. TRAI initiated discussions on CNAP in 2022 through a consultation paper, outlining possible methods for its implementation. After extensive deliberations with telecom networks and stakeholders over the past year, TRAI has finalized recommendations for network providers such as Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone-Idea.

TRAI suggests that telecom operators utilize the name provided by subscribers in their Customer Application Form (CAF) for CNAP. Additionally, all service providers should offer this feature to their subscribers upon request. Consequently, the name provided during SIM card registration will be visible to the recipient of the call.

For businesses acquiring bulk connections, they will have the option to display a ‘preferred name,’ which could be a trademark registered with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, GST Council, or any unique name registered with the government.

Once these recommendations are accepted, TRAI expects the Government of India to issue directives instructing network operators to make CNAP available on all devices sold in the country after a specified cut-off date, which is yet to be determined
