Turmeric And Whiskey: A Combination That Blends Beautifully
This bright orange spice is commonly used in Indian and Asian cooking. It has an earthy, slightly bitter flavour that pairs so nicely with the sweetness of whisky and other spirits.
The health benefits of turmeric are impressive too – it’s loaded with antioxidants and has anti-inflammatory properties.
So how does it work in cocktails? The earthiness of turmeric balances out the sweet flavours and gives cocktails a gorgeous golden hue. It adds a subtle kick without overpowering the other ingredients. And its health benefits mean you can feel a little less guilty about indulging.
Some popular turmeric cocktail recipes combine it with whiskey or bourbon, citrus juice, honey or maple syrup, and ginger. Turmeric also blends beautifully into tropical cocktails with pineapple juice, coconut milk, or rum. Or keep it simple with just turmeric, honey, and soda water for a zero-proof option.
Turmeric Syrup
Making turmeric syrup is super easy!
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon ground fresh turmeric.
Method:
- Put the water, sugar, and turmeric in a saucepan. Heat it up over low heat. Keep stirring until the sugar melts.
- Let it simmer for 5 more minutes. Then take it off the heat.
- When it cools down, strain out any chunks of turmeric.
- Pour the syrup into a closed container. It will keep for 1 month at room temperature. Or keep it in the fridge for up to 6 months.
Go on and try for yourself. Just remember to start small with the turmeric until you get the flavour balance right. Your taste buds will thank you!
