US Presidential Election 2024: Democrats Call Joe Biden To Drop Re-election Bid Over Health Issues

Washington: As the US Presidential Election is gaining momentum, Peter Welch on Wednesday became the first Democratic senator to publicly called Joe Biden to drop his re-election bid as concerns rise over his age and fitness. “For the good of the country, I’m calling on President Biden to withdraw from the race,” the Vermont senator said in an opinion piece in the Washington Post.
Apart from Peter Welch, several other democratic leaders also challenged Joe Biden to provide convincing evidence of a viable path to re-election after his failed debate performance, bad battleground state polling and growing concerns that he cannot defeat former US President Donald Trump in the presidential elections, Washington Post reported.
Some of the democratic leaders questioned Joe Biden’s ability to win re-election after a disappointing debate performance and poor poll numbers in key states. They are calling on Biden to show a clear path to victory against his likely opponent, former President Donald Trump, in the upcoming election.”
However, Biden vowed that he will be “running this race to end “of the November election, despite private calls from Democrats to drop out. Biden stood firm and told congressional Democrats in a letter on Monday that he would continue his election bid despite mounting concerns about his mental fitness.
Biden said that he wouldn’t be running again, “if I did not absolutely believe that I could beat Donald Trump.”
“I want you to know that despite all the speculation in the press and elsewhere, I am firmly committed to staying in this race, to running this race to the end, and to beating Donald Trump,” he added.
Further, he also stated, “We have 42 days to the Democratic convention and 119 days to the general election,” Biden said in the letter distributed by his reelection campaign
In the letter, Biden calls for unity among his party, emphasising the need for a collective effort to defeat former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
“Any weakening of resolve or lack of clarity about the task ahead only helps Trump and hurts us. It’s time to come together, move forward as a unified party, and defeat Donald Trump,” said Biden
